Upper School Curriculum

ACE offers a unique and robust curriculum to expand the minds of our gifted students in Upper School.

Math

Our goal in the math department is to develop each mathematician through collaborative problem solving, in-depth discussions, and a deep understanding of how the properties of math are present in real-world applications and examples. Upper School students have the opportunity to earn high school credit for Algebra and Geometry.

At ACE Academy, we use multiple standards, sources, and approaches to best meet the needs of our gifted learners. This includes, but is not limited to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), Beast Academy and the Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) resources and texts, and the Number Lab philosophy
and structure to guide our curriculum.

Literacy

In ACE Academy’s Literacy studies, our main goal is to encourage student development into lifelong readers and writers. In our Literacy classes, students will read a wide variety of diverse texts that strike a balance between the cultural foundation of rich classics in the literary canon as well
as student selected contemporary offerings. We focus on a different aspect of literacy studies, typically centered on a specific craft element authors use, and the analytical skills we use to interpret meaning.

We use several standards and benchmarks, including but not limited to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), the Teachers’ College Reading and Writing Project Units of Study, and the National Common Core to guide our curriculum. We also participate in national events such as the NaNoWriMo Young Writers Program.

STEM

As part of the Upper School curricula, STEM encourages inquiry, increases problem solving skills, empowers student voice in their learning, creates engaged global citizens, and builds classroom community. We offer three-dimensional learning with crosscutting concepts in physical, life, earth, and space science domains along with engineering practices.

We use an inquiry-led approach with opportunities for differentiation in each unit of study. ACE Academy follows the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the International Standards for Technology Education (ISTE) to
guide our curriculum design for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

History, Cultures & Geography

Starting in 5th grade, students progress through a four-year journey spanning world geography, US history and western civilization. Our learners experience the richness and complexity of history through a broad selection of primary and secondary sources. These serve as a vehicle in the development of the critical thinking skills of close reading, sourcing, contextualization, and corroboration. We cover high school concepts, as well as advanced historiographical, research, writing and presentations skills.

Foreign Language

Students choose either Mandarin or Spanish to pursue in Upper School. The goal for language learners is to deepen listening and reading comprehension, while gaining confidence in their ability to communicate and express themselves in another language.

The majority of foreign language teachers are native speakers in their respective language. Upper School students can earn high school credits for their foreign language coursework.
